With heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of Richard Frew Payne Jr., a man of faith, who loved his family, his country and was driven to serve others. Dick departed this life August 14, 2024, in Oregon, Ohio. He was born on February 24, 1942, in New Castle Pennsylvania to Richard Frew Payne and Ina May Payne. Dick spent most of his childhood in New Castle. Attending schools in Indiana, Blissfield, then settling in Temperance, Michigan. Dick graduated from Bedford High School, where he excelled in wrestling & football. For most of his life he was a die-hard University of Michigan Football fan.
One of Dick's greatest loves was working as a first responder. When he was young, he was first employed as policeman in upstate New York. Dick later joined several fire departments (Palmyra & CETA in Kalkaska, MI) and started an ambulance company serving Lenawee County. He worked as a repo man and bail bond bounty hunter. He had his own stealth tow truck for "snatching" cars. There were many sides to Dick. He saved people's lives, ran into burning buildings and delivered babies. A voracious reader, he knew something about everything, and he could do or fix almost anything. Dick was also an intellectual type, enjoyed philosophical exchanges about life, but most of all he was a man of God. He was a conservative who believed in the bill of rights, the United States Constitution and was pro-life. Dick was happiest when he was singing and in fellowship with the church.
Dick is survived by his wife Karla Kay Payne, and Son Richard Frew Payne III (Andrea), stepchildren, Dana (Billy) Grigsby, Steven (Heather) Brown, and Carla (Kurt) Holda. Grandson Caleb Frew Payne, grandchildren, Diedre Lester, Bryce Koch, Carlie Torres, Grant Bonk, Will Grigsby and Gabe Holda, Hanna Grigsby and Riley Bonk, Alexandra Brown (Alex) & Jackson Hollis Brown (Jack) Sister Holly Adams. Dick was preceded in death by his father, his mother and his sister, Pamela Joyce Rimmer.
