John T. Szaroleta

July 17, 1932 — September 25, 2021

John T. Szaroleta, who owned and operated a men’s clothing store in Point Place for decades, passed away Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021. Mr. Szaroleta (Jas) was well known in Toledo’s Polish community and in Point Place, where he owned and operated Szar’s Men’s Wear on Summit Street for many years. Prior to that, he owned and operated Silka’s Men’s Wear on Lagrange Street.

He was born on July 17, 1932, in Toledo, to Jan and Anna Szaroleta, who owned and operated Atlas Bridal Shop on LaGrange Street. He attended Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, the University of Detroit and the University of Toledo. He enjoyed fishing on Lake Erie, gardening in his yard and rooting for the Toledo Rockets basketball team. As an avid genealogist, Jas traced the family history back to the 1600s.

Szar's Men's Wear, which is now owned by his son, Bill, has long been a gathering place where customers share stories and gossip while shopping or waiting on a suit to be tailored.

John is survived by six children, Mike (Carol) of Holden Beach, NC.; Joan (Tony) Lopacki of Manassas, VA.; Bill (Susie) of Toledo; Tom (Lee) of Fleming Island, FL.; John (Amy) of Toledo; and Marge (Dave) Stapleton of Lombard, IL.; and 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie, brothers Chet and Leiszek.

Our special thanks to Bill and Susie Szaroleta who welcomed Jas into their home and, along with John Szaroleta, provided a loving family-centered quality of life for his final years. We would also like to thank MemoryLane Care Services, especially Kenny, Rosie, Gale, Brook and Andrea.
