Delphine D. Hojnacki, age 89 passed away peacefully on August 2, 2024, at StoryPoint Waterville. Del was born on January 23, 1935, in Toledo, Ohio, to Walter and Clara Darowski. Del grew up in the Lagringka Polish neighborhood and attended St. Adalbert Grade School and Woodward High School (Class of 1953), where she was captain of her cheerleading squad and recipient of the Babe Ruth Memorial Award for athletics and sportsmanship. Del married Ron, the love of her life and high school sweetheart, on November 7, 1953, and they both enjoyed life together with family and friends for nearly sixty years.
Del was wonderfully devoted to her four children, nine grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren who brought so much joy to her life. Before and after raising her children, Del worked at Lion Store, LaSalle's, and Hallmark Greeting Cards before retiring in 1997. However, her passion was youth athletics, coaching track, and cross country at St. Catherine's Grade School for CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) with her husband Ron for many years. Del was honored by CYO for her contributions in 1985.
When she was not raising a family, working, or coaching, Del enjoyed ceramics, crocheting, watching the Detroit Tigers, and relaxing with Ron and family at her favorite area restaurants, including Inky's, Ventura's, Classic Cafe, Mayberry Diner, Eddie Lee's, Chateau Louise, and J&G Pizza. She was a long-time member of St. Catherine's Church and Christ the King Church.
Del was preceded in death by her husband Ron (2013) and sister Jean Bittinger. She is survived by her sister Dorothy (Larry) Scripp, children Jeff (Susan), Mike (Peggy), Debbie McNulty (Steve Marcus), and Linda (Jeff) Ellis, grandchildren Rachel Hojnacki, Kerin (Ryan) Houk, Michelle Hojnacki, Eric (Claire) Hojnacki, Morgan (Brandon) Snead, Kevin (Rose) McNulty, Lauren McNulty (Tom Gilchrist), Nadia Ellis, Sergey Ellis, and great-grandchildren Samantha Snead, Wyatt and Monroe, Harlow and Hazel Houk, Malcolm Hojnacki, Angelina Myrice and Adelyn Ellis.
