John Bernard Jokinen

John Bernard “Jack” Jokinen, 84, passed away at 6:14 p.m. November 14, 2022, at Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
Jack was born November 18, 1937, in Toledo, Ohio, to Eli and Clara (Meyer) Jokinen.
He attended Sherman Elementary School, Macomber High School and graduated from Woodward High School in 1954. Jack served in the U.S. Army, a member of the Honor Guard at Arlington National Cemetery. He often told stories of being in close proximity to people in the Kennedy/Johnson administration.
Jack worked as a glass inspector for Libbey-Owens-Ford Company for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of Local 9 United Glass and Ceramics Workers.
Jack was an avid sports fan, especially of the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Browns, Boston Celtics, Toledo Rockets and Ohio State Buckeyes. His trip with family to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and his first Dodgers game at Wrigley Field were highlights in retirement. A Hollywood and mafia history buff, Jack loved watching old movies, his favorites being those with Humphrey Bogart, James Dean and Clint Eastwood. His favorite actress was Julie Harris, who he saw in 2001 at the Valentine Theatre. He brought her a rose and sat in the front row. For many years he was the self-proclaimed “Mayor” of the Tropics Bar on Sylvania Avenue.
Jack was most happy when spending time with his three grandsons, often telling stories, making up songs, and teaching the boys things their parents often frowned on! He loved talking about sports with them and he and his sister would go to as many of their games and other activities as possible.
Jack is survived by three children, John (Barbara) Jokinen, of Delta, Julie Jokinen, of Anchorage, Alaska, and Beth (Heather Rutz) Jokinen, of Lima; three grandsons, Nathan Jokinen, of Delta, Emmanuel Jokinen-Rutz, of Lima, and Jacob Eberly, of Delta; and a sister, Judith Nickoloff, of Toledo. He was preceded in death by his parents, former wife, Shirley Jokinen; daughter-in-law, Laura Jokinen; brother-in-law, Charles Nickoloff, and numerous aunts and uncles.

Memorial Services
Jack’s Life Celebration will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Monday, November 21, 2022, at Urbanski Funeral Home a Life Celebration Home, 5055 Secor Rd. Toledo, Ohio. Visitation will continue Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until the funeral begins at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Megan Croy will officiate. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park, Sylvania, Ohio.
Memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Cherry Street Mission in Toledo, which Jack supported faithfully, or to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
