SISTER ARLENE MARIE HOFFMAN, SND
December/17/1934 - July/16/2022

SISTER ARLENE MARIE HOFFMAN, SND
If we gathered the threads of Sister Arlene Marie Hoffman’s life, we would see beneath the tapestry the very life of God as Sister lived it until her death on July 16, 2022, in her 88th year of life and 62nd year of religious profession. Professing life with the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1959, Sister received the name Sister Mary Bernerd, later changed to Sister Arlene Marie.
Sister will be remembered as an outstanding seamstress, a ministry she held for 35 years. Whether the task was a Sister’s religious habit or a craft to be sold, the outcome was perfection done in humble self-giving. Quiet, often behind the scenes, Sister manifested her spirituality more in writing than in conversing. Her sewing was not routine or mechanical; her heart went into the fabric, and it became prayer. Beneath the seeming ordinariness of her life were treasures of holiness manifested in commitment to community and mission. The very quality of her presence became mission.
Sister’s other abilities were in teaching primary grades in Ladyfield School and Gesu School, Toledo and volunteer work in the school library at Sacred Heart School in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. Sister spent eight years in hospitality and homemaking at Lial Renewal Center in Whitehouse, Ohio, along with two years at St. Joseph School and Parish in Erie, Michigan. Sister was a food service assistant at the Provincial Center before she moved into the Sisters of Notre Dame Center in Whitehouse when it opened in December 2015. Over the past few years Sister experienced health problems, but she never complained. Rather she maintained her smile and ever-present interest in others, especially enjoying gatherings with family and classmates from Notre Dame Academy.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents Bernard Louis Hoffman and Evelyn Lucille (Mackey) Hoffman. She is survived by her two sisters Bernice Marie Schumann and Sharon Rose Soster, along with nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her religious community.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 21 from 2:00-4:00, and the funeral liturgy will be at 4:30 p.m. at the Sisters of Notre Dame Center, 5900 Davis Road, Whitehouse, Ohio. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery on Friday, July 22 at 9:30 a.m. Tributes may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame at 3912 Sunforest Court, Toledo 43623.
