SISTER LEONIE MARIE MAIGRET, SND
April/29/1942 - February/10/2022

Sister Leonie Marie Maigret, 79, passed into eternal life on February 10, 2022. She jumped into life’s adventures and, with her trust in God and love of people, landed firmly on both feet. Her sense of adventure may have been inherited from her parents, Leo and Paula (Wulterkens) Maigret. The family of three girls and two boys left Soesteberg, Netherlands to come to Toledo, Ohio under the sponsorship of the Schoen family when Leonie was fourteen. Eventually the family moved to Sylvania, Ohio.
Baptized Leonarda Petronella Jacoba, Leonie began high school at Central Catholic in Toledo with no knowledge of English, and eventually received a high school diploma from Burnham High School in Sylvania. She worked in a podiatrist’s office for several years. During this time she met the Sisters of Notre Dame. She joined the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1987, at age 45, and made vows in 1989. Attending Lourdes College, Sister received an associate degree in gerontology, and for the next decade worked in the SND infirmary as an activities coordinator and aide. In 2001 she moved to Lial Convent in Whitehouse, Ohio, where she ministered as driver and kitchen assistant.
In 2007 she accepted the position of coordinator of religious education at St. John Parish in North Charleston, South Carolina for four years. Never shying away from new experiences, she also became the art teacher perfecting her artistic talents by taking pottery and watercolor classes and engaging in crafts, skills she continued when moving to Notre Dame Academy in Toledo. Wherever she was, whatever she did, Sister Leonie had a hearty laugh, a knack for including others, and delight in her family and Dutch ancestry. Important to her was living each day of her 34 years of religious life with generosity. Illness caused her move to Rosary Care Center in Sylvania, where she resided six months before requiring Ebeid Hospice, where she died on February 10.
Sister is preceded in death by her parents and sisters Paulina and Paula Maigret and brother Henry. She is survived by her sister Joanne Kowalka and brother Herman Maigret. She will be greatly missed by her family and religious community.
Visitation will be on Thursday, February 17, 2022, at the Sisters of Notre Dame Center in Whitehouse, Ohio from 2:00-4:00, with the funeral liturgy at 4:30 p.m. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery on Friday, February 18, at 9:30 a.m. Tributes may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame at 3912 Sunforest Court, Toledo.
