Gary R. McKinley, Sr.

Gary R. McKinley, Sr. age 74 of Toledo, Ohio passed away July 5, 2021 at his home after a lengthy illness surrounded by his loving family. Gary was born May 20, 1947 in Toledo to Robert and Irene (Cieniewski) McKinley. A 1965 graduate of Central Catholic High School, he attended the University of Toledo and served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Gary married Tami Schiefer October 23, 1971 in St. Rose Catholic Church Perrysburg, Ohio. His love of service continued with a 25-year career as a Police Officer. He served as an officer on the Washington D.C. Police Department, the Waterville Police Department and on the Toledo Police Department from 1973 until he retired. Gary was a 32nd degree Mason, he served on the Toledo Police Credit Union Board and the Toledo Police Support Team. In retirement, he served as a courier for a local law firm for another 10 years. A father of three children, he loved and supported his family. “Grandpa Gus” as he will be remembered, enthusiastically attended many school and sporting events at St. Francis DeSales, St. John’s, Central Catholic, Notre Dame Academy, Northview, Christ the King and Gesu schools. His silly demeanor and dimpled smile will be missed by all who knew him.

Surviving are his loving wife Tamra McKinley, daughters Kerri (Paul) Townley and Kristin (James) McKinley-David, son Gary “Bumper” (Natasha) McKinley, II. , sister Lynette (John) Gorman, brother Robert (Lynda) McKinley, brothers in law, Terrence (Mary Jo) Schiefer and Thomas (Diane) Schiefer II, grandchildren, Lindsey, George, Abraham, Madeline and Lucia Townley, Sydney and Keegan Lynch, Desean and Isaac McKinley David, Preston McKinley Pruitt, Sebastian McKinley, Alex, Lauren, Ally and Annie David. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death were his parents.

Gary’s family will be receiving family and friends Friday July 9, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until noon in Christ the King Catholic Church 4100 Harvest Lane Toledo, Ohio. Funeral services will begin at noon in the church. Interment of his cremated remains will be held privately. Arrangements were entrusted to Urbanski Funeral Home a Life Celebration Home 5055 Secor Rd. Toledo. Memorial contributions are encouraged to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the Toledo Police Athletic League “PALS”.
