John A. Cisek
December/13/1928 - June/16/2021

John A. Cisek Sr. passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 after a brief illness at the age of 92. Recently, he was moved to an Assisted Living Facility to help improve his quality of life during his battle with Dementia/Alzheimer’s. John was born at home on December 13, 1928. He was one of eight siblings, and was the last surviving sibling. He attended St. Hedwig’s and Woodward High School, but did not graduate. Instead, John went to work for Willys-Overland (Jeep) days after his 16th birthday. He worked there for 42 years, mostly at Gate 3 as a Security Guard, at the main plant. After being laid off, he proudly went and framed his pink slip. His time at Jeep was interrupted by a tour of duty in the Army during the Korean War. He was posted in Frankfurt, Germany as part of the 540th Military Police Railway Guard Battalion and rode the trains in Frankfurt. He often shared many stories with family and friends.
John met his wife, Dorothy, (Tomanski) at a bar, and they were engaged after just six days. They were married on September 25, 1954 at St. Hedwig’s Church, and were married for 64 years until Dorothy’s passing in 2019. Although John never finished High School, he was incredibly smart. He could take ANYTHING apart and put it back together. He loved tinkering with things to see how they worked. You could also count on Dad to repair something that was broken. He loved his woodworking, had a brilliant mind for detail, and was such a perfectionist! He could eyeball measurements to 1/16 of an inch. He was THAT good. And he did his crossword puzzles in pen! He and his brother-in-law built a wooden cabin cruiser boat in the early sixties. He remodeled his basement into a recreation area - complete with a slate pool table, fully stocked bar and a set of full-sized kitchen appliances. Most appliances were rarely used, except for the fridge, which was full of beer, soda and Dean’s ORANGE twin pop popsicles. He conscripted his children as helpers in this endeavor. He tore apart his daughter’s first car, a 1964 Corvair convertible and had it repainted by Earl Scheib’s for the princely sum of $29.95. He found replacement parts at junk yards and rebuilt the interior and engine, and it NEVER leaked oil! It was a thing of beauty. He built baby furniture for his grandchildren, and beautiful custom kitchen cabinets for his son. He also remodeled his daughter’s kitchen. After he retired, he loved “junkin”. He would buy small non-working motors for a couple of dollars and tear them down and repair them, then paint them better then new. He was the original Rick Dale (American Restorations). He was incredibly organized. He could show you the original receipt from the caterers of his wedding 64 years ago. He could also tell when someone was in his tools, because they didn’t put it back in the exact spot and direction. The handles were always in the same direction. John was also a long-time member of the Conn-Weissenberger Post 2020 and the Toledo Commodore Club. He loved his Polish music, snacking on his “good” chocolate-covered caramels, cherries and raisins, as well as drinking his cold chocolate milk and buttermilk. Now Dad can listen to all the Jim Ed Brown (Pop a Top) he wants to, and Mom and Dad can dance forever to Patsy Cline’s I Fall to Pieces. John leaves behind his children Linda (Dale) Barker, John Cisek Jr. and Mark (Jennifer) Cisek. Grandchildren: Chrissey (James) Sadowski, Edmond (Jamie Van Natta) Burgess, John (Danelle) Cisek III, Devon (Erin) Barker, Tiffany (John) Zimmerman, Patrick (Felicia) Cisek and Stephanie Cisek. Great grandchildren: Kyiersten, Brynn and Major Sadowski, Savannah, Brayden Zimmerman and Ronald James. He also leaves behind his special angel Renee Martin, who never failed to put a smile on his grumpy face. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Cisek, his parents Mary (Naja) and Thomas Cisek, special daughter-in-law Sue Cisek and all his siblings. He will also be missed by his many friends and wonderful neighbors; current (Tony and Mary) and former (Ginger). In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the Charity of your choice. Visitation for family and friends will be at Urbanski Funeral Home a Life Celebration Home, 5055 Secor Road, Toledo, Ohio on Tuesday, June 22 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm. Additional visitation will be at St. Clement’s Church on Wednesday, June 23 from 9:30 to 10:30 am, followed by the Funeral Mass starting at 10:30 am. John requested he be cremated, and will be reunited with Mom and the Dobermans.

Memorial Services
Visitation for family and friends will be at Urbanski Funeral Home a Life Celebration Home, 5055 Secor Road, Toledo, Ohio on Tuesday, June 22 from 3:00 to 8:00 pm. Additional visitation will be at St. Clement’s Church on Wednesday, June 23 from 9:30 to 10:30 am, followed by the Funeral Mass starting at 10:30 am. John requested he be cremated, and will be reunited with Mom and the Dobermans.
