SISTER MARY MAURUS LABADIE, SND
March/4/1923 - April/24/2021

Lover of music and poetry, compassionate and effective teacher, avid storyteller, beloved friend and community member. This was Sister Mary Maurus Labadie, who died April 24, 2021, in her 99th year of life and 78th years of religious profession. Born Consuelo Lorene on March 4, 1923, she was one of five children of Mark Emil Labadie and Cecilia (Wagener) Labadie. She attended St. Joseph School in Maumee and graduated from Notre Dame Academy. She entered the Sisters of Notre Dame in 1941 and was professed in 1943.
Having attended Mary Manse College, Sister began her 65-year career in teaching children--43 years as a full-time teacher and 22 years as a part-time teacher or tutor. In Toledo, Sister taught at Gesu, Holy Rosary, St. Ann, St. James, St. Mary, and St. Michael. Outside Toledo she taught in Bellevue, Delphos, Fremont, Fostoria, Norwalk, and Sandusky. Her expertise in helping children with special needs led her to Mary Immaculate School in Toledo during his last 22 years in the classroom. In 2011she became a resident of Rosary Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio.
Sister embraced life with keen interest in the arts. She seemed to bask in the brilliance of the great composers and perhaps imagined playing her violin in concert. Her life, like a musical score, was ready to receive divine notes—the whole notes of life wholly lived, the half notes of surrender to infirmity, the quarter notes of steady, daily growth in holiness. One of her favorite violin pieces was “Jerusalem.” Was this choice a way to practice for the heavenly kingdom where Sister Mary Maurus now sings God’s praises in God’s eternal reign?
Sister is preceded in death by her parents, brother Richard, and sisters Rita Labadie, Patricia Ann Labadie Kazmierczak, and Mary Elizabeth Labadie Wiles. She will be missed by her nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and her religious community.
Private services will be on Wednesday, April 28, at Urbanski Funeral Home, A Life Celebration Home, 5055 Secor Road, Toledo. Tributes may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame at 3912 Sunforest Court, Toledo, Ohio 43623.
