Obituaries - In Loving Memory

Judith "Judy" Ann Shumaker
March/21/1943 - November/13/2017

Judith “Judy” Ann (Visi) Shumaker was born March 21, 1943 in Covington, Kentucky to Frank and Pearl (Farkas) Visi. She moved to Toledo in 1945 and lived there the rest of her life. She lived the first nine years of her life in the Birmingham neighborhood, an ethnic neighborhood that was mostly Hungarian. Judy was always very proud of her Hungarian ancestry.

Judy attended Woodward High School and graduated in the class of 1961. She continued her education at Heidelberg College and University of Toledo where she majored in English and graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree. Her entire 30 years of teaching were at Start High School teaching Math & English, and she was chairperson of the English Department for several years before retiring from teaching in 1996.

It was at Start High School while teaching summer school that she met her future husband, Charles (Chuck) L. Shumaker. They were married on August 21, 1971 and he survives her in death. Chuck and Judy were blessed with their daughter Kelley Jo (Shumaker) Sauerzopf on September 28, 1972.

For most of her years, Judy was a member of Calvin UCC (formerly the Hungarian Evangelical & Reformed Church) and with its deep Hungarian roots, it was the church she loved the most. In the 1990s, she took classes at the UCC office in Tiffin, OH and became a licensed pastor with the UCC doing pulpit supply and interim work at many local churches, and she was also a pastor at Faith Community UCC.

Judy loved reading, game shows (especially Jeopardy!), and doing all sorts of needlework including embroidery, crochet, and knitting. After retiring, Judy and Chuck became antique dealers, always looking for hidden treasures and traveling together to antique shows, shops, and flea markets. She also enjoyed summer months spent at the family cottage on Carpenter Lake in Michigan.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents and is survived by Charles, loving husband of 46 years; daughter Kelley Shumaker-Sauerzopf (Chris); precious granddaughter Lauren, light of grandma’s life; brother Frank (Marilyn) Visi; sister Peg (Rich) Rose; special friend and sister-in-law Carmen (Peter) Zwiefel; close friend, Geri Visi; and several nieces and nephews, cousins.

There will be a Celebration of Life after the holidays, date and location are to be determined.
